Maya Valladares

Meet Maya Valladares, Teaching Artist

Meet our Artist Faculty!

Please tell us of an artist, curator, activist, or project that has influenced you or inspired you?

I take a lot of inspiration from Andrea Zittel, one of the first artists I learned about (back int he 90s!) who use everyday items and skills to create new living systems. Lee Mingwei is also an inspiration because his art sets up situations and environments for which the outcome depends on the participants. And of course Buckminster Fuller and Mierle Laderman Ukeles; one must never forget the art-history greats.

Please tell us about a place in your neighborhood that is personally meaningful to you, and why?

The Brooklyn Museum is three blocks away. It’s the first museum I worked at, and the place I take my daughter to most often. We went to the Swoon installation when she was just a month old.

What is your favorite book, film or song about NYC?

I really like “Someday This Pain Will be Useful to You” (movie) and “Don’t Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus” (children’s book).

If you have an idea of a blog post or topic you’d like to contribute to our blog, please share below!

I would like to write an article on museum/community partnerships. Or on Teaching Artist resources/development, though I’d likely have to observe some fellowship sessions for that one.
