BIO

Hatuey Ramos-Fermín (pronounced: Ahtway Rahmos Fairmean) is a Dominican born, Puerto Rico raised, and New York City based artist. He has developed projects and exhibitions in traditional  spaces including galleries and museums as well as non-traditional art venues such as a security guard training school, community centers, churches, restaurants and laundromats.  Additionally, Hatuey has curated roundtable discussions, film screenings, potlucks and podcasts. He has worked at organizations such as the Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Center for Urban Pedagogy, Hostos Community College, among others. Hatuey is co-founder of meta local collaborativeBoogie Down Rides, and is currently the Director of Programs at The Laundromat Project.

His projects have been presented nationally as well as internationally at El Museo del Barrio, apexart, Longwood Art Gallery, Taller Boricua, Andrew Freedman Home, the Root Division Gallery, the Contemporary Art Museum of Puerto Rico, Arsenal de La Puntilla, Open Works Institute, at LP2 Las Palmas Cultural Center, at the Westergasfabriek, among other institutions. His work has been reviewed and/or published in the New York Times, Artforum, Public Art Review, City Limits, Edutopia, New York Daily News, among other publications.

Hatuey received his B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Puerto Rico and a M.F.A. in Photography at St. Joost Art and Design Academy, The Netherlands. He has also been awarded the International Huygens Scholarship Programme of the Dutch Department for Higher Education. In addition, Hatuey is an alumnus of the Immigrant Artist Project at the New York Foundation for the Arts. His distinctions include a grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Community Arts Development Fund Award, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Art’s Shift Residency as well as The Laundromat Project’s Create Change Artist Residency.
