Artist Bio
Hector Canonge lives and works in New York City where he studied Comparative Literature, Filmmaking, and Integrated Media Arts. His work incorporates the use of various media, commercial technologies, physical environments, cinematic, and performative narratives. This past Spring he was a resident artist at LMCC Swing Space Program at Governor’s Island, and a teaching fellow for Artistic Noise. Canonge has been awarded scholarships by Harvestworks, fellowships by NJCU, and has participated in residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, AIM Program 27 at the Bronx Museum of Art, Newark New Media at City Without Walls, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University, and at The Wassaic Project. His work has been featured at the Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum, Jersey City Museum, Exit Art, Flux Factory, Gallery Aferro, NY Studio Gallery, Topaz Arts, Y Gallery, and Grace Exhibition Space among others.
Canonge has been commissioned by the NYC Department of Transportation, The Queens Council on the Arts, Queens Museum of Art, Artists Unite, Association of Hispanic Arts (AHA), and has received funding awards from NYSCA, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council -MCAF Program, and JPMorgan Chase Foundation through NoMAA’s Regrant Program. Exhibitions to his credit include ABSENCE at the Queens Museum of Art, BABEL at Space 37, FRAMING AIDS for Queens Media Arts Development, and Queering Bodies for VISUAL AIDS. He curates and organizes the monthly artists’ program A-LAB Forum at Crossing Art Gallery, and directs the monthly independent film series CINEMAROSA. His work has been reviewed by the The New York Times, ART FORUM, New York Daily News, Manhattan Times, Queens Chronicle, by major networks ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, UNIVISION, etc., and by online publications such as NYRemezcla, Turbulence, and ART CARDS Review among others. Canonge recently launched his three-month Fall 2011 initiative, “Escuela Videográfica Alternativa (Alternative School for Videomaking)” for Immigrant Movement International, and he will represent the United States at AMBER’11 Art and Technology Festival in Istanbul,Turkey.
