Jackson Heights, Queens
Mixed-Media Installation & Public Engagement
Facilitated by 2016 Artist-in-Residence Ro Garrido, A Living Room on Roosevelt brought an interactive living room, typically a private and domestic space, into the commercial corridor of Roosevelt Avenue. The project created an intentional and comfortable space for community members to have conversations and share knowledge and history related to issues of community safety in the Jackson Heights neighborhood.
In partnership with Queens Neighborhoods United (QNU), a local grassroots group working directly on issues of gentrification and displacement, conversations were tied to timely neighborhood issues in the form of open dialogues on the street or facilitated group conversations. The living room also served as a growing visual memory archive of personal and collective immigrant narratives in Jackson Heights.
